Thread veins overview

Thread veins are small, dilated vessels near the surface of the skin. Most of the time, they do not cause symptoms but they can cause concerns aesthetically.

Thread veins are commonly found on the face. They may also occur on the legs in association with deeper varicose veins. They can look like red or bluish spiderwebs under the skin and vary in size.

Laser/IPL thread vein removal

Used predominantly for facial thread veins, laser or IPL treatment is performed by our consultant-led laser team. Laser treatment may also be used for leg thread veins not suitable for treatment with microsclerotherapy.

At your initial consultation, our experts will discuss the desired results and guide you on the number of sessions and best treatment to achieve it.

  • Outpatient procedure
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Minimal downtime
  • Effective results

Microsclerotherapy

Microsclerotherapy is a suitable treatment for leg thread veins and comes under the specialist care of our consultant vascular surgeons. A minimally invasive procedure, microsclerotherapy offers effective results.

  • Performed by consultant vascular surgeons
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Minimal downtime

FAQs

If you want to know more about thread vein treatment, listed below are some of our frequently asked questions.

What are the symptoms of thread veins?

While thread veins may not cause significant symptoms, some people can feel self-conscious about them, especially if they’re on your face.

A small number of people can also experience symptoms in association with leg thread veins. These may include:

  • Burning sensation
  • Itching
  • A tired feeling in your legs
  • Pain

These symptoms may not be caused by thread veins so you should always discuss symptoms with your doctor.

What causes thread veins?

Facial thread veins, (also called telangiectasia) appear due to the widening of small blood vessels near the surface of the skin.  The loss of collagen as you age reduces vessel support and will increase the appearance of thread veins.

Many factors can contribute to the development of facial thread veins. These can include:

  • Family history
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Rosacea
  • Smoking
  • Excessive drinking of alcohol
  • Some prescription medicines
  • Some medical conditions

Leg thread veins are usually associated with underlying varicose veins. Factors that can also contribute to leg thread veins include:

  • Family history of varicose veins
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Being overweight
  • A personal medical history of blood clots
  • Injury or trauma to a specific body area
  • Some prescription medication
